Winter Date Ideas in Northern Virginia: Indoor Dates for Cold Nights

From November to February, the usual date-night list gets shorter. Patios close, outdoor concerts are done for the season, and staying in starts to win by default. Northern Virginia still has plenty to do on a cold night, though, if you know where to go.

Below are winter date ideas sorted by mood, with the practical details: prices, how the two-person minimums work and the 2026 dates for the holiday lights. For a year-round list, see our date night ideas in Northern Virginia.

Cozy dates

These are for a low-key night somewhere warm where you can actually talk.

  • A film at the Angelika in the Mosaic District. The Angelika Film Center is at 2911 District Ave, Fairfax, and the Mosaic District's restaurants are steps away for dinner before or after.
  • A weekday afternoon under the space shuttle. The Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly is free to enter and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except December 25. Parking is $15, or free after 4 p.m. Add a film at the Airbus IMAX Theater and it becomes a full date (visitor details).
  • An easy escape room. Bond's Bowl Voyage is lighthearted and rated Beginner. You play fish trying to escape an aquarium before a rambunctious granddaughter arrives to take one of you home. It takes 2 to 4 players. Until Sunday, November 1, it runs as a Halloween edition, Bowl Voyage: Blood Bowl, with the same puzzles and a shark story.

Active indoor dates

If you'd both rather do something than watch something, these keep you moving without a coat.

  • Free-roam VR. At Bond's VR Arena in Fairfax, you wear wireless headsets and physically walk, duck and aim through the game, and the session is private to the two of you. Each game runs 10 to 15 minutes, so you can play several: Quantum Arena if you want to settle who has the better aim, Cook'd Up if you'd rather work as a team in a chaotic kitchen, or Wizard Academy, a VR escape room. It's $37 a person and takes about an hour including gear-up. The headsets fit over glasses.
  • Ice skating indoors. MedStar Capitals Iceplex at 627 N Glebe Rd in Ballston runs public skate sessions, including a 21-and-over adult session listed at $15. Sessions are posted a few weeks ahead and need registration, so check the schedule first (session times).
  • Or brave the cold. The outdoor rink at Reston Town Center opens on November 6, 2026, and runs to March 14, 2027, weather permitting (rink details).

An escape room for two

Most escape rooms are built for groups, so couples often assume they can't play. At Bond's, four rooms can be booked by two people on two tickets:

RoomLocationPlayersDifficultyBest for
Escape From Venus II: Collision CourseFairfax2 onlyBeginnerA date built for exactly two: repair a damaged ship and stop an asteroid
Bowl VoyageFairfax2-4BeginnerFirst-timers and anyone who wants light over dark
Dr. Panic's AsylumArlington2-6IntermediateCouples who like a scare
Saddlewood Saloon: ExtrateWESTrials!Arlington2-6IntermediateThe Wild West meets an alien invasion

Two tickets cost $68. Every other room has a three-ticket minimum ($102), but the two of you can still play it by paying for the empty third seat. The room stays private either way, and no room at Bond's puts you with strangers.

A few practical notes. Dr. Panic's Asylum has scares, and the game master can dial them down if you ask before you start. Saddlewood Saloon uses flashing lights. If one game isn't enough, a second game on the same day is 20% off, any day of the week, so a room followed by VR is an easy add-on in Fairfax. Bond's deals page lists its military and student discounts, with the fine print.

Double dates

With four people, almost every room is open to you. Bowl Voyage tops out at four, Dr. Panic's Asylum and Saddlewood Saloon in Arlington take up to six, and any room with a three-player minimum works for four people at $136.

For a more competitive double date, split by couple. In the VR Arena, one arena takes up to six players, so two couples can go head to head in Cops vs Robbers or Quantum Arena. The live Game Show in Fairfax is built around two teams, though a standard slot seats 16 and can be shared with other groups. Ask for a private show if you want the stage to yourselves.

Our older list of double date ideas in Northern Virginia has more for groups of four.

Holiday lights and markets

These dates are for the 2026 season and were checked in early October. Look at each event's page before you go, since bad weather can close outdoor events.

  • Winter Walk of Lights, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Vienna. A walking trail of lights, open November 11, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Tickets are $19 online or $24 at the door for November 11 to December 3 and January 1 to 3, and $24 online only for December 4 to 31, plus tax and fees. Last entry is 9:30 p.m. (NOVA Parks).
  • Bull Run Festival of Lights, Centreville. A drive-through display, open November 14, 2026, to January 3, 2027, so you can stay in the car with the heat on. Online tickets run $30 to $45 a car, plus fees, depending on the date (NOVA Parks).
  • Festival of Lights and Carols, Old Town Fairfax. Saturday, December 5, 2026, from noon to 6 p.m. in Old Town Square, with the tree lighting at 5:30 p.m. It's free and a short walk from Bond's Fairfax, so you can fit a late-afternoon escape room and the lighting into one evening (City of Fairfax).
  • DowntownDC Holiday Market. November 13 to December 23, 2026, on F Street NW between 7th and 9th streets, closed on Thanksgiving. It's across the river, but an easy Metro ride from Clarendon if you start the night at Bond's Arlington (DowntownDC).

Give a date night

If the date is a gift, cover the whole evening. Bond's gift cards are sold by the ticket, arrive by email and work at both locations, and the recipient picks the room and the night. A two-ticket voucher costs $72.76 at checkout and covers any of the four rooms that book on two tickets. A one-ticket voucher won't cover an escape room on its own, because every room needs at least two tickets.
