Plenty of gifts end up on a shelf. An experience gift gets used, and the person you give it to can bring someone along.

This guide sorts experience gift ideas in Northern Virginia by who you're buying for, with prices checked in October 2026. It also explains how Bond's gift cards work, including the ticket minimum you should know about before you buy.

What the research says

In a 2003 paper, psychologists Leaf Van Boven and Thomas Gilovich found that people said spending on experiences made them happier than buying possessions (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology). In 2017, Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner looked at gifts specifically. They found that experiential gifts strengthened the relationship between giver and recipient more than material gifts did, because of the feelings the recipient had while using the gift, even when the giver wasn't there to share the experience (Journal of Consumer Research).

So give something specific enough to picture. "An escape room for the two of you" is easier to get excited about than a vague promise of something fun. And cover the whole experience, because a voucher that only pays for half a night out leaves the other half to them.

For couples

  • An escape room built for two. Bond's Escape From Venus II in Fairfax is designed for exactly two players, and three more rooms (Bowl Voyage in Fairfax, Dr. Panic's Asylum and Saddlewood Saloon in Arlington) can be booked on two tickets. A two-ticket escape room gift card costs $72.76 at checkout.
  • Wolf Trap tickets. Wolf Trap in Vienna sells gift cards from $50 that don't expire and can be spent on tickets at the Filene Center, The Barns and the Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods. They're physical cards sent by mail, so order early (Wolf Trap box office).
  • A winter night out. Pair the gift with a plan. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens' Winter Walk of Lights runs from November 11, 2026, to January 3, 2027, with early-season tickets at $19 online, plus fees (NOVA Parks).

For families

One gift for a whole family is tricky, so a shared outing makes sense.

  • Free-roam VR. Bond's VR Arena in Fairfax is for ages 8 and up, with an adult alongside anyone under 13. A family of up to six plays together in a private arena, choosing co-op games such as Plush Rush, a family-friendly tower defense game, or Cook'd Up, a race-the-clock kitchen. It's $37 a person, so it's $148 for a family of four.
  • A family escape room. Bond's escape rooms have no hard age limit, and Kids Mode adjusts the difficulty and theming on select rooms for ages 6 to 13. A four-ticket Bond's voucher costs $145.52 at checkout.
  • A garden membership. A Meadowlark Botanical Gardens membership costs $65 for a family and $50 for an individual, and includes unlimited daytime admission plus discount nights at the Winter Walk of Lights (NOVA Parks).

For teens

Teenagers rarely want more stuff, but they'll happily take a reason to go out with friends. So cover their friends' tickets too.

  • VR with friends. Head-to-head games such as Quantum Arena, a kind of virtual laser tag, and co-op survival games such as Dead Ahead suit a group of teens. Two arenas run side by side, so up to 12 can play at once.
  • The scary room. Bond's recommends its scary rooms for ages 14 and up. Teens tend to ask for Sleepover Slaughterhouse in Arlington, Bond's scariest room, which takes 3 to 10 players.
  • The Game Show. The live Game Show in Fairfax is for ages 13 and up, with trivia, physical challenges and a host who keeps score.
  • A birthday party instead of a present. If the gift is the party, Bond's runs escape room birthday parties as a two-hour package with pizza and a private room, at $49 a guest Sunday to Friday and $56 on Saturdays, for 10 or more guests.

A three-ticket voucher, the minimum for most rooms, costs $109.14. Six tickets, enough for a teen and five friends, cost $218.28.

For coworkers and clients

Bond's booking system sells vouchers of 1 to 10 tickets and a 20-ticket voucher. Each one arrives by email with your message attached. Ten three-ticket vouchers come to $1,091.40.

For a coworker, a three-ticket voucher makes sense. It covers a private room for three, so the recipient can bring two people along. Bond's doesn't publish a bulk rate for gift cards, so for a large order it's worth calling Fairfax at (703) 270-0377 before you buy.

If what the team really needs is a day out together rather than a gift each, Bond's runs escape room team building for groups of 6 to 150.

For the person who has everything

Look for something they wouldn't book for themselves.

  • The hardest room. For the friend who has done every escape room in the DMV, The Frightful Feast in Fairfax is rated Advanced, and many players rank it as the hardest room in the building.
  • The stage. The Game Show puts them behind a podium with a live host and a scoreboard. Standard slots seat 16 and can be shared, so a voucher for four may well put them on stage against another group.
  • A class. Cookology in Ballston Quarter, Arlington, runs hands-on cooking classes and sells gift cards (Cookology gift cards). The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton runs classes in painting, ceramics, glass and fiber (class list).

How Bond's gift cards work

Bond's escape room gift cards are digital vouchers sold through Bookeo, its booking system. Here's how they work:

  • Price: sold by the ticket, at $36.38 per ticket at checkout. That's $72.76 for two tickets, $109.14 for three, $145.52 for four and $363.80 for 10.
  • Delivery: by email as soon as you pay, with your name and a message. Forward it or print it.
  • Where it works: any experience at either location, meaning the 15 escape rooms, the VR Arena and the Game Show. VR and the Game Show are in Fairfax.
  • The minimum: one ticket covers one escape-room player, but every escape room needs at least two tickets and most need three. If the voucher is smaller than the room's minimum, the recipient pays the difference. Buy two tickets for a couple and three for anyone else.
  • VR and the Game Show: these cost $37 a person rather than $34, so a voucher bought by the ticket may need a small top-up.
  • Parties: to put a gift card toward a birthday party, call the location; the front desk applies it to the package.
  • Expiry: the gift card page doesn't state one. If it matters, ask the front desk when you buy.

Bond's also runs standing deals a recipient may find useful: 15% off for military and 20% off for George Mason students, Sunday to Friday, and 20% off a second game on the same day (the fine print is on the deals page). If you're shopping late, our last-minute holiday gift list has more ideas.
